Hot! Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church

We grow in Spirit to Serve our world and Transform lives

Welcome to Live Oak Unitarian Universalist church! We are a faith community that honors the movement of the Spirit, the life of the Mind, and the practice of Ethical living. We practice an evolutionary faith.

* Evolutionary faith is an active conversation between the wisdom of the historic faith traditions and ongoing human knowledge. The goal is to harvest, to glean the abiding moral principles, while casting off temporal human codes. The Unitarian Minister Theodore Parker preached in 1841, "there is one religion that is absolutely true, existing in the facts of human nature and the ideas of infinite God it yields piety within, purity without."

* Evolutionary faith is a verb. Verb faith inquires deeply, "What are those most sacred hopes, those most compelling goals and purposes in your life?" This is in contrast to a passive noun faith that requires intellectual assent to creeds, and dogmas handed down from human authorities. The focus of verb faith is on what we do, how we live. Jesus taught, "By their fruit you will know them."

* Evolutionary faith sees the common ethical core in all the world religions and philosophies. Simply put what we call the "Golden Rule" is found in every religion. The Dalai Lama teaches, "This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness."

Current Sermon Series

The current sermon's series is " ": Philip was 35 years old with a wife and 2 children when he received a terminal diagnosis of ALS. He began reflecting and writing on the spiritual lessons as a "seeker of the dark way." The earth enters a time of darkness and dying as we approach winter. Can we be grateful for limitation, suffering and decay? Is it possible to have an imperfect life and a full life?
